Why I Blog: Finding Purpose Through Words Amid Stage 4 CKD and a Dream for George and the Brave Eagle

Why do you blog?

Good morning—or, well, afternoon, since I just up feeling a bit behind! Living with Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and being bedridden means my days don’t always follow a typical schedule. Fatigue and the unpredictability of my condition often dictate when I can pour my energy into something meaningful. Today’s prompt, “Why do you blog?”, hit me hard because it’s a chance to reflect on what keeps me going, even when I’m late to the party. Blogging has become my lifeline, a way to connect, inspire, and share my passion for a project close to my heart: bringing George and the Brave Eagle, a children’s picture book for ages 3-6, to life through my GoFundMe campaign. Here’s why I blog, despite the challenges of CKD and the constraints of my bed.

A Voice Beyond the Bed

When you’re bedridden with Stage 4 CKD, the world can feel small. My kidneys are functioning at an eGFR of 15-29, which means constant fatigue, swelling, and a strict regimen of diet and fluids. Some days, it’s hard to do more than rest. But blogging? It’s my way of breaking free from those physical limits. Through words, I can reach beyond my bedroom, connect with others, and share my story. Blogging gives me a voice when my body tries to silence me. It’s a reminder that I’m still here, still creating, still dreaming—especially about publishing George and the Brave Eagle, a story of courage and adventure for young readers.

Inspiring Through My Journey

I blog because I want to inspire others, whether they’re facing chronic illness or simply chasing a dream. My journey with CKD isn’t easy, but it’s taught me resilience. By sharing the highs and lows—how I manage the exhaustion, the hope I find in small moments, and the fire in my heart for projects like George and the Brave Eagle—I hope to show others that challenges don’t have to define us. Blogging lets me be honest about the tough days while celebrating the victories, like launching a GoFundMe to fund vibrant illustrations, editing, and printing for this children’s book. If my words can encourage even one person to keep going, it’s worth it.

Building a Community for George and the Brave Eagle

Blogging is also my way of rallying a community around a cause bigger than myself. George and the Brave Eagle is a picture book for 3-6-year-olds, packed with lessons about bravery and friendship. As the author of the Discovering Misty series, I know the power of stories to spark imagination in kids. But publishing a book takes resources, and my health limits my ability to fund it alone. That’s why I started a GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/8ae74f35) to raise $5,000 for illustrations, printing, editing, and more. Blogging helps me spread the word, connect with supporters, and invite others to join this dream. Every post is a chance to share updates, celebrate milestones (like that first $10 donation!), and thank the community that’s helping this book soar.

Finding Purpose in Every Word

Why do I blog? Because it gives me purpose. On days when CKD makes me feel powerless, writing reminds me I can still make a difference. Whether I’m sharing the realities of my health, reflecting on life’s lessons, or championing George and the Brave Eagle, blogging is my way of staying connected to the world and to myself. It’s a space to process, dream, and invite others to be part of something beautiful. Even waking up late today, I’m here, typing away, because these words matter—to me, to George’s story, and to the kids who’ll one day hold this book.

So, I invite you to join me. Check out the GoFundMe for George and the Brave Eagle at https://gofund.me/8ae74f35 and consider contributing or sharing it with others. Let’s bring this story of courage to young readers together. And if you blog, too, tell me—why do you write? Let’s keep inspiring each other, no matter how late we start the day.

Jesus Loves Me – And You!

Just LOOK at those eyes. I have seen those eyes, and so have you – whether you remember them or not. Deep, perhaps very deep, in your memories, is that recollection of His loving arms around you, His great love pouring out into your soul.
I am so very thankful for that great love.

A Journey Through Stage 4 CKD, Bedrest, and Hope for George & the Brave Eagle

How are you feeling right now?

Life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn’t it? Right now, I’m navigating one of the toughest seasons of my life, grappling with Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the reality of being bedridden. Never had any issues with my kidneys before Covid hit me hard — twice.

If you’ve ever faced a chronic illness, you know it’s more than just physical—it’s an emotional and mental marathon. But amidst the fatigue, the doctor’s visits, (leaving the house, really), and the uncertainty, I’ve found a spark of purpose that’s keeping me going: starting a GoFundMe for something very special, my book, George and the Brave Eagle. Today, I want to share how I’m feeling, how my health shapes my days, and why this fundraiser is lighting a fire in my heart.

The Weight of Stage 4 CKD and Bedrest

Living with Stage 4 CKD is like carrying a heavy backpack you can’t take off. My kidneys are functioning at an eGFR between 15 and 29, which means they’re working hard but struggling to keep up. The symptoms—fatigue, swelling, and the constant need to monitor my diet and fluids—are a daily reminder that my body isn’t what it used to be. Fibro is now in the background of my concerns. Being bedridden adds another layer. Some days, I feel like I’m watching the world move on without me, stuck in a body that won’t cooperate. (I’ve had similar issues before, even being so drugged up from meds that I felt — and acted — like a zombie; thankfully, I don’t have that issue. My mind is fairly clear, not 100% but satisfactory.) The fact that I’ve not met my 2-year-old great-grandchild in Missouri is excruciating. It’s frustrating, humbling, and sometimes isolating.

But here’s the thing: even on the hardest days, I’m learning to find meaning in small moments. Whether it’s a kind message from a friend, a quiet moment of reflection, or the chance to advocate for others, I’m reminded that my story isn’t over. And that brings me to George and the Brave Eagle and the GoFundMe campaign that’s giving me a renewed sense of purpose.

A Cause Bigger Than Myself: George and the Brave Eagle’s GoFundMe

George and the Brave Eagle is a book that carries strength, resilience, and hope. He’s facing his own battle, one that resonates deeply with me as someone navigating the challenges of kidney disease. George’s story is one of courage, but he needs our help to keep fighting. That’s why I’ve poured my heart into starting a GoFundMe campaign for this little book. It’s not just about raising money—it’s about rallying a community to show that teaching children about George is so critical for these young patriots.

The GoFundMe is a lifeline for the book, helping cover the financial needs for creating the story. Paying for a quality illustrator is quite expensive. So is marketing to get the book into those little hands. Every dollar raised is a step toward easing my burden and giving me the strength to keep going. (I have plans to publish my other manuscripts, and will need help in the way of financial aid, for quality illustrators.) For me, being part of this feels like a way to channel my own struggles into something positive. Even from my bed, I can make a difference. I can’t run marathons or climb mountains right now, or even attend church, but I can advocate, share, and inspire others to join this cause.

How Am I Feeling? A Mix of Hope and Determination

So, how am I feeling right now? Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. There are moments of exhaustion and frustration, where the weight of Stage 4 CKD and being bedridden feels overwhelming. But there’s also a fire in me—a determination to keep pushing forward, not just for myself but for others like readers of George and the Brave Eagle. Starting this GoFundMe has given me a purpose that transcends my own challenges. It’s a reminder that even in our toughest moments, we can lift others up.

I’m hopeful, too. Hopeful that this campaign will reach its goal, that my family and I feel the love and support of a community coming together, and that maybe, just maybe, my own journey with CKD will inspire someone else to keep fighting. I’m learning to embrace the small victories—each donation, each share, each message of encouragement feels like a win.

Living with Stage 4 CKD and being bedridden has taught me that life’s challenges don’t define us—what we do with them does. Right now, I’m choosing to focus on hope, community, and the power of coming together for something like a children’s picture book, George and the Brave Eagle. I’m choosing to focus on leaving children a legacy of patriotism, bravery, and strength to overcome. How are you feeling right now? Maybe you’re inspired to join this cause or share your own story. Whatever it is, let’s keep the conversation going and support each other through the highs and lows.

Note: If you’d like to share your story or contribute to a blog like this, consider reaching out to organizations like the National Kidney Foundation or Renal Support Network, which often feature patient stories to inspire and connect the kidney community. A Moment of Prayer and Sincere Gratitude

What daily habit do you do that improves your quality of life?

In the hustle of daily life, finding time for prayer and thanks can feel like a challenge, but it’s a habit that transforms my days. Each morning, I pause to offer a quiet prayer, seeking strength and peace. It’s not just words—it’s a moment to connect, reflect, and set a tone of hope. Research from the American Psychological Association (2023) suggests that regular prayer can lower stress and boost resilience, something I’ve felt firsthand as it steadies me amidst deadlines and chaos.

Today, I’m especially thankful. Reaching 100 likes on my blog and seeing 257 views in a week—up 367%—feels like a small miracle. Every like, every view, is a sign that my stories resonate, and I’m grateful for each reader who takes the time to engage. A heartfelt thank you to those who’ve supported “S.M. Ulbrich Author Blog”—your encouragement fuels my writing.

Prayer and gratitude go hand in hand. As I pray for guidance on my next projects, I also thank the community lifting me up, from book club readers to kind emails about “Misty the Mermaid.” Let’s keep this cycle going—share a moment of thanks today, and watch how it lightens your load. What are you grateful for right now?
